Bongwe's Private Safari

Bongwe is as an affordable, versatile, fun and friendly safari operation running bespoke and private safaris into the Lower Zambezi and Kafue National Parks.

We are a small friendly business with Owner Alec Cole at the helm, working hand in hand with Zimbabwean born Jairos Nyamowa who is your Safari Guide and Managing Director of bongwe.

Claudia is your initial point of contact online and will also be meeting you in town when you arrive. She will also be the one to wave you off to the very safe hands of Alec and or Jairos, who are your safari guides for your big adventure. Alec and Jairos have over 40 years of guiding experience between them, in and around Zambia and can't wait to share it with you!

With small groups of just 2-8 on each of our safaris, you will find yourself on what is practically a private trip. This enables our very experienced guides, Alec and Jairos, to tailor your activities to your preferred focus. Be it big cats, birds or just going with the flow to see where the tracks take us.

An example of your Itinerary....

What you'll get up to on your Bongwe Safari adventure should the Kafue be your preferred venue.

09:30 - Off we go!

We depart from Lusaka after breakfast at 9.30am. This allows us to skip all the horrid town traffic and begin our 4 hour journey without an ounce of road rage!

It is a fairly easy journey and after the first 2 hours you will already be in the park area and can begin peeling your eyes in hope you might catch some exciting animal sightings before you even reach our island camp.

13:30 - Welcome to Camp

Once on the island we have a little introduction and safety briefing then introduce you to the accommodation. These are large, walk-in safari tents which contain double or twin beds, are equipped with solar lights, have mosquito proofing and an ensuite bathroom with hot and cold (solar powered) running showers.

16:00 - Day & Night Safari

We offer an afternoon and night safari drive which includes a beautiful sunset over the river.

We use the daylight to track and look for indications where to find the predators and, with night falling, hook up the spot light and begin the search for the nocturnal animals that hunt during the darkness.
Lion and Leopard are abundant here and guests can hope to see many other night dwellers too. African civets, Genets, Hyena, Porcupines, White-tailed Mongoose, Servals, Caracals, Bush Pigs and Bushbabys, to name but a few.

20:30 - A Good Night

We aim to have dinner around 20:30, depending on the evening drive and what we have seen.

Our cuisine is basic, yet tasty. We believe in home-cooked meals which are made from scratch. We will make sure you are not hungry and do enjoy!

After a busy day we head of to bed...before and early start!

05:30-06:00 - Rise & Shine!

We rise with the sun to enjoy a light breakfast while watching for hippo and other river dwelling residents. Out here in nature, the birds have awoken with us and are singing their dawn chorus.

There's a good chance that Lion roared his location for us during the night, or maybe even strolled past your chalet! Either way, we are soon in the car or on foot as it's time to begin tracking and exploring this amazing area.

06:30–11:00 - Safari Time!

As your guides, we are pretty flexible and happy to advise the best activity to take according to clues left behind in the dark. This may be in the form of a walking safari or game drive, or perhaps both. But either way, we will keep you busy until lunch.

12:00 - Lunch is Served

A delicious lunch is served of salads, meats freshly made bread and something along the lines of homemade shepherd's pie... yum!

13:00-16:00 - Chill Out

Today, we will allow you the chance to relax for a few hours after lunch. You can fish from the river bank and try to catch your dinner, swim in the rock pool we built into the river, or just snooze and/or read in the privacy of your room verandas.

16:00 - Day & Night Safari

We will meet up once again to embark on the afternoon and night drive. This is the best opportunity to see a leopard, and no matter who your guide is, you can rest assured we want to see the elusive predator as much as you do! Safari is great fun and you'll struggle to get us to give up the hunt!

20:30 - Back to Camp

Back for dinner in camp and a chance to relax again.

05:30-06:00 - Rise & Shine

It's another dawn call! Again, you can decide between a walking safari or a drive. Check out who walked through the camp last night!

06:30 - Safari Adventure!

We're going keep you busy again this morning, but rather than schedule this activity we like to play it by ear and use the clues and guides skills to optimise the best activity. Either way, you'll be back in camp with time to relax before lunch.

12:00-16:00 - Lunch & Laze

Lunch back at camp followed by a lazy afternoon. Perhaps you'll be ready to catch up on the missed sleep from your early rises?

16:00 - Down the River?

Here we like to leave it up to you, but would suggest a leisurely boat cruise along the mighty Kafue River. The boat cruise is well worth doing and a great way to see elephants and who knows what else!? Last season, a lucky boat cruise spotted one of our beautiful male lions with a mate sunbathing on the river bank!

We meet the car upstream for a cheeky sundowner, after which we head off on the hunt again! By now, we are quite far from camp and this night drive sees us heading back at a leisurely pace with eyes peeled.

20:30 - Good Night

For your farewell dinner, we have put on a delicious braai (BBQ).

05:30 - Rise & Shine?

Don't worry, today is your optional early wake up... We will be there and ready to walk or drive, but if you prefer to relax and enjoy the camp, you are most welcome.

10:00 - Brunch & Departure

Whatever we do this morning, we will return to camp a little earlier for a cooked breakfast.

The transfer back to Lusaka tries to leave about 11am but we can be flexible on this. The plan is to have you back in Lusaka by 17:00 latest. We will be sad to see you go!
